New funding for 1800+ new research projects in 74 regions

The Russian Science Foundation has released the results of the massive call for proposals submitted by small research groups. 1,822 new projects will be funded with more than 2.7 billion Russian rubles allocated for funding in 2022.

The main objective of this funding program is the development of new topics and the formation of new research teams. Grants will be allocated for research activities in 2022 - 2023 in all scientific areas.

1,822 projects were selected for funding out of more than 9 000 applications from 81 regions of Russia. 25% of the new project investigators are early-career researchers under the age of 39. 34% of new project investigators are female researchers at different stage of their career.

“The funding program for small research groups is currently the most massive competitive instrument in the portfolio of the Russian Science Foundation, both in terms of the number of applications and the number of projects supported. The reviewers of the Foundation have carried out several tens of thousands of assessments of the applications, individually and through the panels of the expert council, and I would like to express my deep gratitude to our reviewers for this fantastic work. The new projects will be hosted at 443 organizations from 74 regions across Russia, and this is a truly impressive result,” Andrei Blinov, RSF Deputy Director General, commented the results of the competition.

The leaders in terms of the number of newly approved projects are Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, Ural Federal University, HSE University, Southern Federal University, Prokhorov Institute of General Physics of RAS, Tomsk State University, Ufa Federal Research Center of RAS, ITMO University, National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute".

The projects will be carried out in 2022-2023 by small research groups of up to 4 people. The average size of a grant is 1.49 million rubles per year per project.
